Bhutan Entry Permit & Travel Tips for Indians

Planning a Bhutan trip from Mumbai? Here's what to know about the entry permit, the SDF, getting there, money and local etiquette.

Getting there from Mumbai

Fly from Mumbai to Bagdogra (IXB), then it's a 154 km, roughly 4-hour drive to the Phuentsholing border, where our group tour starts. Custom trips can also fly into Paro via Delhi or Kolkata.

Entry permit for Indians

No visa needed. Indian citizens get a free entry permit at the Phuentsholing immigration office (or on arrival at Paro) with an original passport valid for 6+ months, or a Voter ID, plus passport-size photos.

Sustainable Development Fee

Indian nationals pay an SDF of ₹1,200 per person per night; children aged 6 to 12 pay half. The SDF is included in our group tour price.

Currency

The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee, and rupees are accepted almost everywhere. Carry smaller notes and some cash for markets.

Dress code at dzongs

Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting dzongs, monasteries and temples, and avoid caps and shorts inside.

Staying connected

Indian roaming can be patchy in Bhutan. A local B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM is easy to buy with your permit, and most hotels have Wi-Fi.
